Thanks to dental implants, it's now possible to restore your entire missing tooth. Midland, MI, dentist Dr. Kathryn Winkel helps her patients improve and restore their smiles with dental implants and other treatments and services.
What are dental implants?
Creating your new tooth starts with adding a dental implant to your jawbone during minor oral surgery. The titanium implant serves as a replacement root and immediately begins bonding to your jawbone. By the end of three to six months, the implant will be just as strong and secure as your natural roots.
When your Midland dentist is satisfied with your progress, she'll make an impression of your mouth, which will be used to create a dental crown. Dental crowns fill in the gap of your smile, but they're not merely decorative. Once the crown is attached to the implant, you'll be able to chew normally with your new tooth.
Am I a good candidate for dental implants?
Dental implants may not be recommended if you are a smoker, as smoking can slow healing. You'll also need to be in good oral health. Your dentist may recommend treating tooth or gum conditions before proceeding with an implant. Good gum health is particularly important, as your gums help hold your teeth and your new crown in place.
Your dentist will evaluate the depth of your jawbone as part of your pre-implant evaluation. If your jawbone isn't deep enough to adequately support your implant, it may ultimately become loose or even fall out. Luckily, a shallow jawbone doesn't have to prevent you from receiving a dental implant. Adding bone grafts to your jawbone will increase depth, allowing you to proceed with the implant process.
Good oral hygiene is particularly important when you have a dental implant. Although your new tooth may not be real, you'll still need to brush it and floss around the base carefully to prevent an infection. If you're a dedicated brusher and flosser, you'll have no trouble caring for your implants.
